Caviat – Christianity is derived from Jewish mythology, folklore, traditions and history. For this reason, I am using Jewish and Christian scriptures to explain their deities. Other cultures, to include Africans, Asians, Indians, Europeans and all Indigenous Peoples have their own completely different mythologies and spiritual heritages. This is not a treatise against any group, just a Bible lesson for the spiritually curious.
Despite What You May Have Heard, the Name Lucifer is Mentioned Only One Time in the Christian Bible.
A satan is not Lucifer, though Lucifer could be considered a satan to his own enemies. A satan is a descriptive title meaning an adversary or one who withstands. A demon or devil is totally different. It is an evil spirit, from the fallen watchers and their children, the giants, left to roam the earth [Enoch 13:1 – 14:5 and Enoch 15: 8-9]. Not all fallen watchers or angels were bound, only their leaders to include the chief angel Azazel, his associate Semjaza and other chiefs of tens [Enoch 10:1-12]. Watchers with lesser rank and the souls of the giants were left to roam the earth because they could not enter heaven or the realm of the human dead.
Please note: Humans can also create evil entities using their intent.
To repeat, a satan is a descriptive title like captain, or chief, not a proper name like Mary or John. So a satan can be any enemy you have that works against you, human or non human.
Most of what Christians know of ‘the devil’ comes not from the Bible, but from fictional sources such as Milton’s Paradise Lost or Dante’s Inferno. Links will take you to the books on Amazon.
Lucifer, however is described in the Bible as a specific person:
1. Lucifer came to Earth from Heaven-
Isa 14:12
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
1. Jesus came to Earth from Heaven –
Jhn 1:1
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Eph 4:10
He that descended is the same also that ascended up far above all heavens, that he might fill all things.
2. Lucifer said he would ascend to Heaven –
Isa 14:13
For thou hast said in thine heart, I will ascend into heaven, I will exalt my throne above the stars of God: I will sit also upon the mount of the congregation, in the sides of the north:
Isa 14:14
I will ascend above the heights of the clouds; I will be like the most High.
2. Jesus said he would ascend to Heaven, and reportedly did –
Jhn 14:2
In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you.
Mar 16:19
So then after the Lord had spoken unto them, he was received up into heaven, and sat on the right hand of God.
3. People would look at Lucifer and ask if he made earth to tremble:
Isa 14:16
They that see thee shall narrowly look upon thee, and consider thee, saying, Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;
3. People would look at Jesus and acknowledge he made earth to tremble:
Mat 27:54
Now when the centurion, and they that were with him, watching Jesus, saw the earthquake, and those things that were done, they feared greatly, saying, Truly this was the Son of God.
4 and 5. Lucifer was cast out of his grave and thrust through with a sword:
Isa 14:19
But thou art cast out of thy grave like an abominable branch, and as the raiment of those that are slain, thrust through with a sword, that go down to the stones of the pit; as a carcase trodden under feet.
4 and 5. Jesus was cast out of his grave and thrust through with a sword:
Mar 16:6
And he saith unto them, Be not affrighted: Ye seek Jesus of Nazareth, which was crucified: he is risen; he is not here: behold the place where they laid him.
Jhn 19:34
But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came there out blood and water.
6. Lucifer was called the Son of the Morning or Morning Star –
Isa 14:12
How art thou fallen from heaven, O Lucifer, son of the morning! how art thou cut down to the ground, which didst weaken the nations!
6. Jesus said he was the Morning Star –
Rev 22:16
I Jesus have sent mine angel to testify unto you these things in the churches. I am the root and the offspring of David, and the bright and morning star.
Who is the ‘Real’ Chief Satan According to Jesus?
Perhaps Christians have it all wrong and the primary deity that was written about and worshipped in the old testament is not all powerful, but considered an enemy of Jesus:
The Old Testament God of Israel was defeated by another Deity named Chemosh, God of Moab:
2Ki 3:26
And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew swords, to break through even unto the king of Edom: but they could not.
2Ki 3:27
Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt offering upon the wall. And there was great indignation against Israel: and they departed from him, and returned to their own land.
The Old Testament Deity was Called a Devil by Jesus
Jhn 8:44
Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do. He was a murderer from the beginning, and abode not in the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.
The Old Testament Deity was Called a Satan by Jesus
Rev 2:9 [to Smyrnans in modern day Turkey]
I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.
Conclusion – Do Christians Really Know Who Jesus Was and What He Came to Do?
Obviously, there has been an historical conflict concerning who and what evil is.
It is accepted by most scholars that Jesus was a true, historical figure. Jesus was clear in his message, which is what landed him on a cross, but how many Christians truly hear him even today?
Perhaps it is time to require certain educational credentials for Christian preachers and teachers to prevent the spread of false gospels and widely known misconceptions. Jesus said he was known by a name that only he knew. Perhaps nobody knows his name because people are not reading for themselves or listening carefully.
Rev 19:12
His eyes were as a flame of fire, and on his head were many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself.
