For years, I felt an unexplainable longing—a sense of displacement, as if I were searching for a missing piece of myself. It wasn’t until I delved into my ancestry that I discovered the root of this feeling. Through DNA testing, I learned that I am 76% West African, with the majority of my heritage tracing back to Nigeria. This revelation was more than just a number; it was a confirmation of a connection I had always felt deep within my soul.
As I immersed myself in precolonial African history, I found myself drawn to African Traditional Religion (ATR), particularly the Yoruba spiritual system. This journey led me to an even deeper awakening—I was initiated as a priestess of Shango, a powerful Orisha of thunder, justice, and transformation. Through my initiation, I no longer felt lost. My Yoruba readings confirmed what my DNA had already revealed: my roots are deeply embedded in Yoruba heritage.
A Relationship with the Ancestors
One of the most profound experiences of my spiritual path has been my connection with the Egun (ancestors). Over the years, I have been visited in my dreams by powerful ancestral spirits who offer guidance, protection, and clarity. Their presence is undeniable—within 48 hours of speaking my concerns to them, I have witnessed tangible shifts in my waking life. This sacred relationship reaffirms the vital role that African Traditional Religion plays in preserving our heritage and guiding us through life’s challenges.
African Spirituality: A Distinct and Vital Force
Even among those who practice Christianity in the African diaspora, the influence of African spirituality is undeniable. Christianity practiced by those of African descent carries an energy, passion, and depth that distinguishes it from non-African expressions of the same faith. It is infused with the rhythms of the drum, the power of dance, the raw emotion of call-and-response worship, and most importantly, the unshakable connection to spirit and ancestors.
African heritage expresses itself vibrantly through:
- Colorful and symbolic clothing
- Traditional music, especially the sacred beats of the drum
- A deep emotional and spiritual connection to the divine and the unseen
- A communal way of living that fosters strength and resilience
Without this connection, the African diaspora remains lost and undefined, susceptible to societal narratives that diminish our beauty, potential, and divine heritage. When we forget who we are, we risk falling into the trap of undervaluing ourselves in a world that often fails to acknowledge our true worth.
Returning to Our Roots: A Necessary Reunion
While not everyone will choose to relocate to Africa, it is essential for people of African descent to make the journey back—whether physically, spiritually, or intellectually. This act of reconnection serves as a powerful realignment with our ancestors, our culture, and our collective strength. Whether through pilgrimage, studying our traditions, or engaging with African spiritual systems, rediverging into our heritage empowers us and sets the foundation for future success.
In a world where many seek to erase or appropriate our history, embracing African Traditional Religion, precolonial history, and cultural practices ensures that we preserve what is rightfully ours. Africa is not just our past—it is our present and our future.
